END AS  FRIENDS  WITH MEDIATION.

Welcome

Kansas Mediation Services is designed to provide you with an alternative to expensive, emotional, and time consuming court procedures. Mediation and conciliation are forms of alternative dispute resolution. Alternative dispute resolution is growing in popularity in domestic cases such as divorce, paternity, and custody actions. You may not always be spouses or partners but you will always be mom and dad (parents). Divorce and custody cases are emotionally charged and unlike any other case. After the trial you still have to interact with the other parent for the rest of your lives. An adversarial trial where mud, insults, and dirty laundry are shared with the court causes hard feelings that make it difficult to co-parent once the trial is finished. You cannot effectively communicate about your children if you despise the other parent.

Studies have shown that children do better with the input and regular involvement of both parents. Court proceedings do not foster supportive relationships and can be harmful to the children. Alternative dispute resolution allows you to control the custody, parenting, and property issues, not the judge. It provides an alternative to expensive trials and attorneys in divorce, paternity, and custody cases.

Resolving your differences through Kansas Mediation Services is also much quicker than a trial. In most cases, if both parties are reasonable, we can resolve your issues in days or weeks, not months or years. This is far less expensive and far more affective in starting the healing process.

Whether you opt for mediation or conciliation we will be glad to work with you. Call for your appointment today so we can work on your future in a non-confrontational manner that is better for you and your children.

About

Steven & Bonnie Jensen
Kansas Mediation Services is a family owed business operated by a family law attorney, Steven A. Jensen, and his wife Bonnie. Steve is a licensed Kansas attorney with over 25 years of legal experience. He continues to operate a sole practice with Bonnie as his administrative assistant. The office is located in Paola, Kansas, but we can service most of Eastern Kansas.

For over 20 years Steve’s practice has emphasized family and domestic matters, such as divorce, custody, parenting time, paternity, child support, property division, debt and asset distribution, maintenance (alimony), and general issues related to the family. Because of his experience as an attorney, he can provide a specialized insight into what a court might do if the matter proceeded to trial, and then work with you accordingly. During the mediation process he will work to find a resolution that fits your case and your family. He can prepare child support worksheets, property division worksheets, settlement agreements, and other documentation necessary to present to the Court for resolution of your specific situation; not fill in the blank general forms. As a lawyer Steve’s documents are designed to meet the needs of you and the court.

Why Mediation

Alternative dispute resolution such as mediation and conciliation is growing in popularity in domestic cases such as divorce, paternity, and custody actions.

Mediation allows you to control the custody, parenting, and property issues, not the judge. Mediation vs. Conciliation

Mediation and conciliation are two different forms of alternative dispute resolution. We prefer conciliation to mediation and are moving toward exclusively providing conciliation services. In general, with mediation the only communication with the court by Steve will be to tell the court whether you have an agreement or not. If there are four issues and you resolve three issues, but not the fourth, then with mediation Steve can only send a letter to the court that mediation was unsuccessful.

With conciliation Steve can communicate with the court and submit a recommendation on issues you are unable to agree upon. Under the example above, Steve could send a letter to the court and set out your agreement on the three issues, set out each of your positions on the fourth issue, and then make a recommendation to the Court about how to resolve the fourth issue. Also, if custody or parenting time is at issue then Steve can then act as a parenting evaluator and meet with friends, relatives, teachers, counselors, and other persons that might have pertinent information and then do a written report to the court. Most people agree that conciliation provides the most bang for your buck.
